Kicking off this weeks episode with a sublime slice of gospel soul from Shirley Caesar, seeting the mood nicely as the mix continues into some classic mod soul. Things take a turn into the Hip Hop realm as I drop the new 45 from J-Zone who waxes lyrical on the state of the industry. I hover around the late 80's and early 90's before ending with a set of upfront vocal house sure shots.
While most people were infatuated with the brand new Dr Dre release, his cousin Warren G released a great new EP to minimal fanfare. Unlike the Dre album, Regulate... G Funk Era Part II is a natural extension from the iconic G Funk sounds he championed in the late 90s, and a very welcome return to form. Naturally I gravitated towards this release for this weeks opening track, which nicely frames an excursion into some golden era Hip Hop classics before taking the show into deeper eighties soul grooves, before finishing on a stratight up club feel.
Another round of new releases mixed in with some all time classic material. Kicking things off with a new Flying Lotus produced track from Thundercat with a heavy funk homage to Steely Dan. On the Hip Hop tip we see a welcome return from Large professor, as well as the release of the much anticipated Fabreeze Brothers album from Phill Most Chill and Paul Nice. I play a track off the new Bilal album and local producer Fdel, before ending the show with some up tempo new grooves from Opolopo (Signed to Joey Negro's Z records), and broken beat maestro…
Kicking off this weeks show with one of my own blends, as I toughen up a much sampled Bill Conti tune before heading into a touch of oldschool grooves. A bunch of new releases also makes the cut including a great new 45 from Milan based production outfit Cross Roads who do a fantastic cover version of an old Candy Bowman classic from 1981. In a similar vein is the new release from Melbourne's Sugarz who dropped a new single this week produced by Benny Badge. There is a heap of new Hip Hop from the likes of Slum Village,…
More classic joints in this weeks episode, skirting around the edges of Hip Hop with the Brand Nubian anthem Punks Jump Up To Get Beat Down before heading into a soulful groove with the recently re-released 45 of of Milton Wrights Keep It Up. Towards the end of the show I feature the new disco anthem from Aeroplane and Bleu Toucan.
Classic material this week as I delve into the crates and pull out a much requested show of seventies and eighties Soul, Funk, and Boogie - With a dash of Disco and House towards the end, which makes this episode the perfect start to your weekend. Back to the new releases next episode.
It's been an absolutely huge month of new releases, and in this episode I catch up on some of the great material that has surfaced including new albums from Crazy P, Snoop Dog, and Raekwon - Plus new singles from Ameriie, Jill Scott, Tensnake, De La Soul, Chemical Brothers featuring Q Tip, plus a new Lionbabe track produced by DJ Premier - all in the usual mixtape style
So I've had a few weeks off.. You know, the usual life stuff that tends to get in the way of doing a weekly radio show. Hopefully this episode makes up for the delay. A heap of new music and classic joints on offer this episode, featuring the return of Grand Puba (of Brand Nubian fame) who drops quite a sullen offering from his forthcoming long player. It's a teaser but hits all the right spots.
This week Groove Therapy gets soulful, kicking off with a wonderful acoustic version of Ledisi's 'I Blame You' which really packs a punch towards the end. I sample a little gospel from Kirk Franklin, and go all the way disco with Gloria Scott. New releases from the reflex who carves up Deee-Lite, A massive new disco bomb from Chic, A funky little 45 from J Zone, and things get hot with a new club monster from Moonbootica.
A huge show of new releases it amazing I still was able to fit in some classics. This week Kool Keith of the Ultramagnetic MCs dropped a new tune produced by Static Selektah. R&B crooners Jodeci are back with a new album, Boca 45 drops a new LP of cut & paste sample goodness, We get a taster from the forthcoming new album by Snoop Dog produced by Pharrell, and on the local tip I preview new material from Sydney producer Chasm, Husky from Random Soul, and Melbourne's Cy Gorman - Plus a bunch more!
